Institut Pasteur Korea

Institut Pasteur Korea (IP-K) was founded in 2004 as a translation research center. Since then, we have integrated the developments in genomics, imaging, bioinformatics and robotics to create a new model of drug screening. By screening genes and compounds for their impact on cell-based disease models, we can identify potential new therapies without knowing what their targets are.

Our approach accelerates the drug discovery process, reduces its cost, opens the door to entirely new classes of drugs, and offers new insights into the mechanisms of disease. IP-K unites molecular cell biologists, imaging specialists, medicinal chemists and biophysicists in the pursuit of new drug discovery and development technologies. We tackle both infectious and chronic diseases using our PhenomicScreen™ and PhenomicID™ platforms.

Identifying new drug leads
At the core of the program, our technology experts run a powerful proprietary phenotype-based screening technology that integrates robotics, image mining, miniaturized screening platforms, genomics and drug discovery.

Image processing and data mining have reached powerful new levels, making it possible to rapidly comb through millions of cell images to detect even subtle consequences of pathogenesis. Combining this with robotics, we can perform what we call PhenomicScreen™ the fully automated screening of cells for compounds and genes that alter cellular disease.

Identifying new targets
PhenomicID™ is an approach aimed at identifying novel therapeutic targets in complex disease model systems by finding genes that worsen or lessen the visual disease phenotype. It combines genome wide RNAi or cDNA over–expression screening with our live cell imaging technology. Using our proprietary, innovative visual array technology, we are able to represent siRNAs corresponding to the entire human genome on a few glass slides. The effect of individually knocking down or overexpressing all human genes can then be assessed in a precisely defined, visual manner on a statistically significant number of living cells. We can run a genome-wide profile in as little as 8 hours.
