Dharmacon Inc. was founded in 1995 as Dharmacon Research, Inc. by Dr. Stephen Scaringe, who developed a novel method of chemically synthesizing RNA under the direction of Professor Marvin Caruthers at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The Dharmacon Product line of Thermo Fisher Scientific is located in Lafayette, Colorado, midway between Denver and Boulder near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. In March of 2004, Dharmacon became a wholly owned subsidiary of Fisher Scientific International, Inc. In November of 2006, Fisher Scientific International, Inc. merged with Thermo Electron Corporation to become Thermo Fisher Scientific.
