Thermo Fisher Scientific

Dharmacon Products are part of Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science. Dharmacon Inc. was founded in 1995 as Dharmacon Research, Inc. by Dr. Stephen Scaringe, who developed a novel method of chemically synthesizing RNA under the direction of Professor Marvin Caruthers at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

This process is known as 2'-ACE chemistry and its development and commercialization was the impetus for establishing the company. Over the years, 2'-ACE RNA chemistry has been validated as a definitive leap in technology and is the industry standard for RNA synthesis.

In the late 1990s, RNA interference (RNAi) burst onto the research scene and has developed into a revolutionary tool in the arsenal of researchers studying the function of genes.

In RNAi experiments, synthetically-manufactured small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are used to specifically and efficiently knock down the expression of one or more target genes, enabling the study of their functions and interactions. Learn more about how it works here.

Thermo Fisher Scientific has leveraged its expertise in synthesis chemistry, RNA biology, and bioinformatics to become the world's leading supplier of RNA, siRNA, and RNAi-related technologies.

Thermo Fisher Scientific provides a complete range of products for researchers in RNAi and was the first to deliver a set of siRNAs that targets the entire human genome, about 21,000 genes. We have since delivered more than ten complete sets of genomic siRNA libraries.

Our Research and Development group are world-class and routinely make presentations at scientific conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and are among the thought leaders in the field.

The Dharmacon Product line of Thermo Fisher Scientific is located in Lafayette, Colorado, midway between Denver and Boulder near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. In March of 2004, Dharmacon became a wholly owned subsidiary of Fisher Scientific International, Inc. In November of 2006, Fisher Scientific International, Inc. merged with Thermo Electron Corporation to become Thermo Fisher Scientific.
