The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) provides a scientific and educational environment of the highest standard and conducts innovative research in life sciences for the benefit of developing countries. It commenced operation in 1987 as a special project of UNIDO (the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) and became an autonomous intergovernmental organisation in 1994. A total of 59 countries are now full Member States.
Scientific activity at the Trieste Component of ICGEB focuses on several advanced projects in current biomedical research. The research programmes include basic science projects (control of gene expression, DNA replication, DNA repair and RNA processing), studies on human viruses (HIV, HPV, rotavirus), molecular immunology, molecular genetics, experimental hematology and human gene therapy. Currently, 16 Research Groups are active at ICGEB Trieste.
In 2008, a High-Throughput Screening Facility was established at the ICGEB Trieste. The main goal of the HTS Facility is to foster the application of high-throughput screening approaches, in particular genome-wide RNA interference screening, in fundamental biomedical research by providing the research community with a platform of up-to-date instrumentation and adequate expertise.
