Paul Luzio has BA and PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge where he studied biochemistry.
After a few years away from Cambridge he returned and became a University Lecturer in the Department
of Clinical Biochemistry in 1979. In 1996 he was promoted to Reader and in 2001 to Professor of
Molecular Membrane Biology. He moved to CIMR in 1998 and became Director in 2002. Paul is a Fellow of
the Royal College of Pathologists and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
Paul Luzio's present research interests are in understanding the biogenesis and function of lysosomes. They include (i) investigation of the sorting and delivery of lysosomal membrane proteins; (ii) investigating the protein machinery for sorting ubiquitinated, endocytosed membrane proteins into the lumenal vesicles of multi-vesicular bodies; (iii) understanding how fusion events involving lysosomes are regulated; (iv) understanding how abnormalities of traffic in the late endocytic pathway may lead to disease. The expertise in our research group includes subcellular fractionation, immunoisolation, cell-free assays, immunolocalisation at the light and electron microscope levels, flow cytometry, live cell imaging, molecular cell biology of membrane proteins.
