The mission of the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Eppley Cancer Center is to
coordinate basic research and clinical cancer research, patient care and educational programs
and to facilitate application of new knowledge about the etiology, diagnosis, treatment and
prevention of cancer and to improve health and quality of life.
Kenneth H. Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., is Director of the Eppley Cancer Center and the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases at UNMC. The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center, conducting multidisciplinary basic and clinical/translational cancer research. It is the only NCI-designated cancer center in the state of Nebraska. In fact, the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center is one of only 61 NCI-designated centers in the country and the only NCI-designated cancer center in the central region of the U.S. from North Dakota to Texas. The Cancer Center, which was initially established in 1983, utilizes and incorporates the expertise and resources from each of the Colleges and Institutes that comprise the University of Nebraska Medical Center as well as its affiliated hospital (The Nebraska Medical Center). The Cancer Center also integrates cancer research resources from other academic units of the University of Nebraska (University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska-Omaha). The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center is a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), an alliance of 19 of the world's leading cancer centers that develop standards and set guidelines for treating patients. This means the most current and ground-breaking treatment options are available to our patients through the translation of cutting-edge research into state-of-the-art care. Cancer Center physicians and scientists work together to quickly translate discoveries made in the laboratory to innovative treatments for the patient in a caring and compassionate manner. |

Genome-Wide RNAi Global Initiative We plan to take advantage of the genome wide siRNA approach and uncover critical components in pathways that contribute to tumor formation and cancer therapy. Combined with the Cancer Center's programs in structural biology, bioinformatics, and clinical research, the findings from the siRNA screenings will make significant contributions to the prognosis, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. |
